The University of Wuppertal was established in 1972 as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) drive to create a practically oriented (or 'comprehensive') higher education sector. Already existing HE institutions in the region, like the Schools of Engineering, Industrial Art, and Education, were assimilated into the new format and expanded to incorporate new departments. In 2003 the so-called 'Comprehensive University of Wuppertal' was restyled simply 'University of Wuppertal'. The initial 3473 students by now numbered 13.800. A main focus of degree programs remained on the traditional Wuppertal subjects of engineering and science on the one hand and art and design on the other, with economics and the humanities given new prominence and state examinations for future school teachers offered in a wide variety of subjects. BUW will (jointly with Linköping University) be responsible for work package 3 ‘implementation process management and co-lead work package 4 ‘monitoring action plans’. The work in WP3 includes e.g. the consultancy and reflection of the implementation process in each GAIA institution. Apart from this, BUW will be actively involved in the majority of work packages. Jennifer Dahmen will be work package leader and member of the Executive Committee and responsible for the organization and conduction of the project work at BUW. Susanne Achterberg will be part of the BUW team as Team Leader, which is completed by the three transfer agents Christel Hornstein, Iris Koall and Hans-Werner Treichel.

Jennifer Dahmen, social scientist, researcher at the Equal Opportunities Office at the University of Wuppertal. Rich experience in EC funded research: Accompanying measure INDECS (5th FP) led to her diploma thesis on ‘Attractiveness of Engineering Degree Courses for Women’, followed by WomEng (6th FP) a three year research project about women in engineering education and professional sphere and PROMETEA a strep-project within the 6th FP focussing on women engineers careers in academic and industrial research. The latest project was MOTIVATION, a coordination action financed in the 7th FP, focussing on promoting positive images of SET (science, engineering and technology) in young people. Above Jennifer Dahmen worked as subcontractor in the tender “Meta-analysis of gender and science research” (7th FP).

Dr. Susanne Achterberg, social scientist, gender consultant in appointment procedures, coordinator of the Summer University in SET for girls at the University of Wuppertal, researcher at the Equal Opportunities Office at the University of Wuppertal. Main research interests: gender relations, gender and diversity, generation relations, gendered career and employment patterns.

Dr. Christel Hornstein, social scientist and journalist, since 2000 equal opportunity officer at the University of Wuppertal. Main emphasises of work at the University of Wuppertal are: university development planning, equal opportunity controlling, indicatory allocation of funds and the implementation of the gender profile. She is chairwoman of the gender equality commission at the University of Wuppertal.
Dr. Iris Koall, economist, since January 2011 responsible for the staff development at the University of Wuppertal, her special focus lies on a human resource management under gender and diversity aspects. Additionally she is freelance supervisor and diversity trainer.
